Vincent van Gogh is one of the world’s favourite artists, with his paintings, drawings and letters serving as inspiration for people of all ages. His work is proudly displayed in countless museums across the globe. Many of the places where the artist lived and worked – from the Netherlands to southern France – are open to the public. The Van Gogh Europe route interconnects six museums and nine heritage sites in three different countries. These are all locations where Vincent van Gogh lived or where his work can be admired. Together, they tell the artist’s life story and illustrate his evolution from a young boy into a master painter who would take the history of art in a whole new direction.
With close to 90 paintings and over 180 drawings, the Kröller-Müller Museum owns the world’s second-biggest collection of Van Gogh’s work, purchased by Helene Kröller-Müller between 1908 and 1929. Much of the collection is on display in varying arrangements in the Van Gogh gallery.
DID YOU KNOW…
… Van Gogh sold just one painting in his own lifetime?
… He did all his paintings in the final decade of his life?
… The most expensive Vincent van Gogh painting ever sold, a portrait of Dr. Gachet, changed hands for €62.2 million?
…He cut off a piece of his own ear? No one really knows why to this day.
